Medical (general)
Definition from
NPR:
A diagnostic test that detects viral particles in blood or bodily fluids. Through a process called PCR, or polymerase chain reaction, small amounts of pathogen DNA are amplified — or copied --- to sufficient levels for detection. Studies of isolated pieces of DNA are nearly impossible without PCR amplification.
Example sentences:
As ICMR has allowed rapid antibody testing in India, experts believe that it will help the agencies to enhance screening and identifying capabilities. Presently the government uses the PCR tests to detect Covid-19 from samples of throat or nasal swab of people with symptoms. (India Today)
Indonesia to receive 50,000 COVID-19 PCR test kits from South Korea (The Jakarta Post)
Most coronavirus testing discussed by public officials and the media refers to polymerase chain reaction testing, better known as PCR. The RT-PCR machine heats and cools the samples in a process that essentially Xeroxes the DNA, making thousands of copies of any genetic material in the samples. (Live Science)
