Spanish term

Dése fuerza de ley

Spanish to English Law/Patents Law (general)
I'm translating a series of provisions from an Organic Law of a Latin American country and I found the following one:

Artículo 4.- Dése fuerza de ley al Decreto Supremo No. XXXXXX..........

I know it must be phrased as "It shall be given force of law to Supreme Decree No. XXXX", or something like that, but I just wanted to confim if this is ok.

Thank you!!

Clarification Hi All,

After making some consultations with some fellow lawyers, thay all agree that an alternative for the text in question would be as follows:

***Concédase/Otórguese rango de ley al Decreto Supremo No. XXXXX*********

I hope this is any helfpul.

Thank you!!
ethais (asker) Mar 4, 2011:
There are no dates in this sentence. I have included it exactly as it is shown in the legal text. The XXXXX represents a hidden numbering for the Supreme Decree.
AllegroTrans Mar 4, 2011:
Asker What's the rest of the sentence here? This could be important, especially if it contains a date

shall be given the force of law

Supreme decree no. xxx shall be given the force of law. It's exactly the same construction in English.
Example sentence:

ll orders and regulations enacted by the Military Governor or other Government ministries shall be given the force of law.

to give legal status to...

This seems to have the meaning of being made effective but the link provided refers to legal status so perhaps this is a better translation.

Spanish term (edited): dar fuerza de ley

to make effective

xxx shall be made effective...

Por otra parte, creo que tu traducción no es correcta.
Nunca había escuchado "to give force of law".

En ese caso, te sugiero la siguiente alternativa:
"XX shall be enacted...."

Mira la definición de "to enact" en este link:

Note from asker:
Gracias por tu respuesta Giovanni, Sin embargo, en este caso no considero que se trate de "effectiveness" puesto que el texto legal no alude a la validez o vigencia del Decreto sino a darle calidad o rango de Ley que, por regla general, no tienen los decretos. Saludos

neutral philgoddard : Eduardo's attempt may not be grammatically correct, but he has the right idea!
